Reproduction and Installation Carved Stone Finial Spires, Gilded Crosses

., Connecticut

Tornado damaged sandstone finial spires at corners of main church spire. The original work on the ground was cleaned up and disposed of by the City, so take offs had to be done in the air and from photos. The stone was acquired from the exact same quarry it was originally taken from, 150 years previous, long abandoned. It was fabricated and preassembled, with a structural rod down the center, to provide a pick point for the crane. The day of the install was blustery and the steeplejacks were concerned that the load would blow around and jeopardize the operation. The crane operator laughed and asserted that the load was so heavy that it would stay dead still, whatever the wind did. He was right, but not so for the steeplejacks, they had to hang on tight to do their job. Each spire topped by a small wooden cross, newly fabricated and gilded, 23 carat gold leaf.
